Open Energy

Open Energy is about making energy systems and information more accessible, transparent, and collaborative. It focuses on sharing knowledge, technology, and resources enabling individuals, communities, and organisations to collectively benefit, contribute and drive innovation. This approach promotes deeper cooperation and accelerates progress within the energy sector.

Through fostering innovation and healthy competition, Open Energy offers more options and improved tools for managing energy. It empowers individuals to take an active role in transitioning to cleaner, smarter energy systems, giving them greater control over their energy future.

Making data on energy consumption, production, and efficiency easily accessible enables individuals to make informed decisions, helping them use energy more efficiently, reduce their carbon footprint, and lower costs.

Communities can embrace shared renewable energy solutions, like solar panels or wind turbines, or establish locally-owned and managed energy networks. This reduces dependence on major energy companies while fostering affordable and sustainable.

Energy providers can optimise supply and demand by gaining insights into when and how energy is consumed or generated, enhancing grid management and overall efficiency.

Encouraging collaboration on green technologies drives innovation in energy generation, storage, and conservation, especially from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower.

The goal of Open Energy is to shift away from centralised, profit-driven systems dominated by a few large companies. Instead, it promotes decentralised, community-led energy solutions where everyone can engage, contribute ideas, and take full control of their energy footprint. It’s like the "open-source" movement in technology, but for the energy sector!

The introduction of a Consumer Data Right (CDR) for the electricity sector establishes a legal framework for Open Energy and, as the Consumer Data Right is extended beyond the energy sector, will unlock incredible potential within and across different industry sectors - this is Open Everything. The vision is to, literally, open everything, spanning both private to public sector organisations, such as banking, energy, health and government services.
